Playa del Carmen has an abundance of restaurants to choose from and ranging in all different types of cuisine and prices. As locals, we like eating out a lot and have a few favourites that we would love to share with you and think you shouldn’t miss out on!
Catch – The Thompson – $$$
This rooftop restaurant adds a contemporary and sophisticated twist to traditional seafood dishes. Catch offers spectacular views of Playa and an excellent atmosphere. Try their sashimi trio, whole fish, sushi.
Open Thursday to Saturday from 6 pm – 1am and Sunday to Wednesday from 6 pm – 11pm.
La Cueva del Chango – $$
Located on 38th between 5th and the beach in a unique and natural setting. Open from 8 am until 11 pm they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner offering an array of traditional Mexican dishes, fresh juices with some vegan and vegetarian options as well.
Las Hijas de la Tostada – $
Gourmet seafood tostadas made with fresh ingredients. Their flavourful dishes are reasonably priced and the ambiance is casual and laid back with excellent service. They started off with just a few tables and have now expanded to their brand new location on 5th avenue and 38th.
Piola – $
This local favourite is popular for their wood fire pizza. There is a large patio with a large seating area perfect for a casual meal with friends or family. Got any food restrictions? Try their gluten free, vegan Zuchetti. Open daily from 1 pm to 1 am, located on 38th right off of 5th.
Po-thai – $$
I only recently discovered this restaurant and it has quickly become one of my favourites. This is a small family-owned restaurant located on 10th corner of 14. They are open from 4pm until 11pm. We loved their green coconut curry, pad thai and their tom yam soup all made by thai chef Jo.
Los Aguachiles – $
Another popular seafood restaurant amongst locals, aguachiles are similar to ceviche made with fresh seafood, lime, chilli and cucumber. Try their aguachile with avocado sauce and their fresh tuna figurines which are tacos wrapped in lettuce instead of a tortilla. They have two locations, one on Constituyentes between 1st and 5th open from 12 pm to 10 pm, and a second location on 34th corner of 25th open from 12 pm to 7 pm.
